Could use a little help.. June 13, 2010 J. D. Gillis (Tulsa) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
When I bought these speakers about 4 years ago they were the best sounding outdoor speakers available locally. They've been exposed to the elements and the searing Oklahoma sun and have suffered only minor plastic degredation of the cabinet. I took care of this with a quick sanding and a can of Krylon.
Sound-wise, they were aweful. "What do you want from an outdoor speaker?" Its just background noise anyway, right? Well, yes. for most.
The problem with these (and pretty much ANY speaker with a plastic cabinet) is the plastic cabinet. You have to consider that the reason the drivers are in a box in the first place is to control the sound being transmitted off the back side of the drivers. There is just as much energy being jammed into that small enclosure as there is coming off the front and into your yard. This makes it a hostile work environment.
..So, It's time for some damping and absorbing.
First, get yourself the correct star drive. make sure its at least 1.5" long. Open it up. Take note of the wiring coming off the xover. (Don't worry, it's Army proof.)
Next, take a look at the box ribbing and crosshatch bracing of the baffle. Stuff these voids but good with non hardening modeling clay. Don't be shy in the corners, a lot of noise lives there. (Standing waves). Look at the drivers. My woofers haxd a stamped cage with what appeared to be a stamped screen where a void should be. It was "chuffing" at volume. I cut that out, leaving 4 braces supporting the driver. (If you attempt this and manage to screw the pooch, replacement drivers can be found at [...]. Get 2.)
Roll out the clay to about 1/8" and apply as a gasket. Apply modeling clay in between the ribs after reinstalling the woofer. While youre at it, make a gasket for the horn too. Now start stuffing the clay into every void you can find. Remove the xover, get a good load of clay in there and carefully press it back into place. Give the BACKSIDE of the horns a good scuffing with some coarse sandpaper and press clay onto it until it is completely covered right upto and including the transducer. I also did the tweeter side of the the ducts..(Dont stuff these.)
If you did it like me, you just went through about 10lbs of modeling clay and damped those boxes silly.
Time to absorb some noise. Lots of stuff is good for this, But since this an outdoor speaker, I would stick with compressed fiberglass insulation. The likes of whick you might find insulating a duct.
Reassembly; reconnect the leads. If you can solder them on , so much the better. Now would be a good time to test them. Be patient during reassembly, you might have to remove some clay. Screw it up, re apply screen, plug and play.
Is it worth it?
The whole process took me about 2 hours(because I needed an easy out)and I'll be listening to these for many years to come.
The sound? Gone is the plastic bongo noise, it is about as nonresonant as a ripe melon. Without getting into any snobbish audiophile prose, by absorbing standing waves and damping resonations the cabinet is much quieter and you can hear what klipsch always did best, the drivers. Clear and tight. It will sound weird at first. Thats because you just removed several db's of distortion that you had become accustomed to.
Hang on to your hat, there's more. Replace your wiring with braided 12 guage twisted pair. The 12 guage can be found at Lowe's or the depot. Get red and black. twist them up with a drill(this may take some practice), and if you can, tin the ends.
Now get out there and disturb the neighbors!!
Good Product February 18, 2010 Nelson J. Oppermann (Campinas, Brazil.) This is a really good product for its price range. The sound quality is really good, very clear. Good bass and excellent highs.
If you don't need a powerful sound I really recommend those speakers!
Great sound December 25, 2009 Joe (New Orleans) I have these speakers on back patio and they are very high quality. Plenty base and great sound. I would purchase again.
Klipsch KHO-7 Speakers Rock Solid! November 29, 2009 J. Yaede (Hamilton, NJ) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
After two seasons of torturing myself with a cheap set of "Dual" outdoor speakers I could take no more. First I searched Amazon and read many reviews on lots of different brands. Took notes on model numbers, etc so hopefully I could hear some at my local audio stores before purchasing. I was primarily interested in a set of "Polk Audio's" for around $159.00, but I made the mistake of purchasing the "Dual's" without hearing them first. I figured it will get the sound out there and be good enough, boy was I wrong! So this time I wanted to hear them before purchasing. So off to Best Buys I went to hear the "Polks" and check out the other brands they had. Well, they had about a half dozen different sets starting at around $100.00 a pair on up. I really did not want to spend more than $200.00. Truthfully I listened to all of the brands (including the "Polk's")they had and I wasn't impressed much. They all sounded about the same, tinty with very little bass and not that much better than the "Dual's" I already had. Until... I pressed the button for the "Klipsch" KHO-7's! Within seconds I was hooked! These speakers had excellent bass for there size! They seemed much more efficient(louder) at the same volume than the other brands. They sounded as good as a decent set of indoor speakers. Needless to say I was impressed with the sound quality. Then, I looked at the price, Best Buy had them on sale for $319.00 a pair, regularly $349.00. This was much more than I wanted to spend. So I kept switching back to the "Polk's" trying to convince myself they were good enough, but every time I heard the Klipsch there really was no comparison to me. They just sounded that much better. So, I wrote down the model number to hopefully purchase them on Amazon at a better price. Unfortunately, at that time, Amazon did not carry this model of Klipsch. So, back to Best Buy I went, bit the bullet and purchased them for $319.00. I have absolutely no regrets and let me say this. Every time I play these speakers I thank myself for not compromising and purchasing something cheaper. The speakers include the mounting brackets and are very easy to install. You can angle them about 180 degrees with the thumb screws. I prefer to take mine down and bring them in for the winter to prolong there life. I would recommend using a good quality 14 or 12 gauge copper speaker wire. My KHO-7's are hooked up to a vintage Sansui 9090DB pushing 125 watts RMS @ 8 ohms per channel. The type of music I most listen to is Rock from the 60's thru the early 90's, mostly eighty's hair band stuff, etc. I don't think you could find a better sounding set of outdoor speakers in this price range. I like these "Klipsch KHO-7's" so much I plan to purchase another set next spring for the other side of the house. If music means more to you than just something in the "background". Do yourself a favor and check out the sound of these speakers before you purchase anything. I think you will agree they are well worth the price.
Solid pair of speakers October 26, 2009 Mike F (Southern Cal) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've only had them a couple weeks but am very impressed with the sound.
They are in my backyard and can really fill the area with sound!
I had been looking for outdoor speakers for some time and had done a lot of research online. I thought I knew what kind of speakers I wanted for the price I was willing to spend but then I went and listened to a bunch of speakers they had hooked up side-by-side at a Best Buy, I was shocked at what I heard! The other speakers ALL sounded tinny and small. It was amazing how much deeper and fuller the bass was on the KHOs. After listening, I couldn't bring myself to buy any other speakers, even though these were more $$ than I wanted to spend.
As long as they last, I'll be very satisfied with them.
